Beginner Riders

A Beginner rider at Plum Grove Equestrian Center is a rider that has very little experience around horses. The rider has not competently ridden without assistance at the walk and trot.

A beginner rider is required to take private lessons. This allows the rider and instructor to work together and develop a relationship with the horse. Beginner riders will start with one horse and will not ride a different horse until a comfort level has been established.

Beginner riders will learn horsemanship from the ground up. This includes:

  • Gaining an understanding of basic horse behavior,
  • Learning to lead the horse, and
  • Grooming and tacking their own mount.
Beginning riders are obligated to ride lesson horses and will start out on a lunge line until they are comfortable to guide the horse on their own at the walk and trot.

Typically, first lessons for the youngest students are 30 minutes, and for students age 7 and up, 60 minutes. The first several minutes of each lesson are reserved for grooming and tacking.  The time spent on unmounted work usually decreases as the student becomes more familiar with the process.

Horses suitable for these lessons are: Plum  Chester  CJ Murphy Nigel and  Hayley
